Alpha Bravo Charlie: A tale of Honour

Omair Ahmed . 12

“Aankhein dekhti reh jaati hein” well Faraz, gulsher, kashif and Shahnaz the four most popular most loveable and endearing characters ever to grace our screens.

The romance of army on television screens is ages old and we saw many terrific productions like Aahan, Shahpar, Samunder Jaag Raha Hai and Nishaan e Haider. but Alpha Bravo Charlie was way ahead of them all.

A simple tale of three young army officers who we have seen before in “sunheray din” as they embark on the start of thier professional life. The way they go through their service patterns and then how they all end up falling in love with the same girl shehnaz(Some would disagree with me on Kashif)

I think that shahnaz was probably the most charming character i have ever seen on pakistani tv screens. She was beautiful, intelligent, witty, confident and so strong headed. she just brings in the complete package. I think in this play Shehnaz really was the X factor. speciaaly the two hotel scenes, first one with gulsher (the whole pashto with the waiter thing) and then with faraz (when she orders everything on the menu) were touch of a class but the best one perhaps was the scene in which she walks up and confronts gulsher in the park” Aap kai sajhtay hain main aap par fidaa ho gayee hun. buhat aam si shakal kai admi hain aap”. I am yet to see that sort of a defined female character again.

The most endearing and enticing thing about the drama was that for the first time the army guys were not “holier than thou” as they always used to be. It was a play where they were human beings with emotions so characteristically human. that’s why the audience fell in love with them even Kashif who was the imperfect army officer.(this is a lesson for all the writers never elevate your characters to a stature above human beings). The scene where he is left sleeping alone in the exercise area was adorable to say the least.
Shoaib mansoor was simply at his best through out. the cinemato graphy was equisite thee camera angels a treat to watch. the locations specially the ones in bosnia and Siacheen were simply breath taking.

Shehnaz and gulsher were so magical in thier scenes they cohorted like clockwork. The moments they shared were brilliant”yeah Marks& spencer kai suit yaa buhat ameer log pehntay hain yaa meray jaisay” and when gulsher opens his eyes to see shehnaz wearing a burqa were all treat to watch. and the icing on the cake was gulsher shouting Shehnaaz from the roof top of their building.”humaaray kaun se bachay hain jo STN dekhen gay Ptv hi thik hai”

even the emotional issues are addressed so well the sequence of Kashi on Siachen top was methodical and beautiful. the post combat trauma faced by kashif was unique for PTV where every war hero is mortified it was just so humane.

it was such well executed  play that it is impossible to find a fault line. yet i guess the relatively weaker points were, the lack of chemistry between faraz and shehnaz(it was fine just not as electrifying as the other two), Gulsher’s captivity in Bosnia and the way his track ended was a bit dragged(bit is stressed here).

Any way alpha bravo Charlie was a land mark play. a true mile stone of television. one really looks forward to ISPR coming bakc with such inspiring productions again

  • After reading this article I want to see the drama again right from the start from first episode.

hi i watched this drama when i was in first class or may be in 2nd and never again , today i watched this .I was overwhelmed totally overwhelmed.I m a person who is not involved in the dramas now .It occupied me totally ,largely ,because of it,s era the 90,s the best and would be the best era of my life when i was not mature and i was free from every intellectual social complexes. This drama is associated with every bit of memory of
mine.Few dramas have effected me devastatedly as i m not romantic person at all but very past loving these are shahla kot, qurat ul ain and this damn good ABC .I have no passion of forces but i m the person who in the word of theoratical physist RICHARD FEYNMAN hate presteig, ego and honour. But all i love about this drama is my precious and very precious memories of my childhood when their was only PTV.
And yr i m devastated by the fact that the beautifull character shahnaz(shahnaz khawja) is now changed totall(or may be she was same at that time). She is now in USA and become totally american girl. Her dialogues with gul sher on the dinner arranged by fraz were killing .She must not allowed to be changed .She is now ultra modern. If she would have remained same shahnza of ABC then what a beautifull thing it would have been?Although its her own life but i was astonished to see her recent pics. How time changes people so severly.BRO lets do all our efforts to bring back the 90,s and it,s ptv to see the ABC very very first time with all its character(gulsher, faraz ,kashif and shahnaz) unchanged ,although it is rediculios .

ABC, best drama ever!..I never used to watch dramas completely after ABC but I watched ham safe when people made it extra famous .Although it was good but not as much as i was expecting from the way the audience were praising..I have words for humsafar or zindagi gulzar hai but don't have such great words to express my emotions for such a great drama (ABC)…

Best Pakistani drama serial ever! I'm recently watching it again for the 1000th time. Beautifully filmed and all the characters did an amazing job. And I agree with Annabe about our new generation unaware about this amazing TV show.

  • Annabe

I still watch it, again and again. (whenever I get the chance)

And Gulsher he was my most favorite character but at the end he died :|

It's one of the most fantastic drama I have ever seen <3

Unfortunately many of my friends are unaware about it :((

Which is a big tragedy, our new generation is not aware about our outstanding

dramas as much as they are aware about foreign stuff ://

pakistani dramas r all famous in the world, especially those ones when there was no sign of cables nd accessibility to our homes,no internet nd whatever intertainment we see nowadays, now if v compare previous ptv dramas like shekhpar, alpha bravo charlie nd so on….many like that to the dramas which is play in this era i tnk there is nothing to compare with them b/c big sort of difference you will obsorb in them, not to say more i wanna say about the drama which was directed by shahid mansoor, one of the rememerable drama for all those who saw it,i tnk this was an awsome job done by shahid bhai,nd again its need to be bring all the four characters on the tv screen nd made once again the play like alpha bravo charlie nd once again to left the memmories nd to chill out our dead screen

i was what in grade 4 or 3 at the time when ABC first came on. i still remember having goosebumps watching this drama (and I was not even old enough to understand the complexities and the hidden emotions underlying each character) You are right faraz, there is no one mature enough to write a review for such a drama so Omair you just tackling is a huge thing.

People point out and claim that humsafar has 200,000 fans. Yep, no doubt but that happened during the hype and in era where everyone just had facebook and who would remember a drama that was made 14-13 years ago, but ABC still has more fans (on facebook) and to me, and people still remembering it and watching it, it still stands on top of Pakistan’s golden era.

I still watch this drama every year and I can never seem to get bored of it, not one bit, not from any parts (even the ones that were stretched). From all the crap stories that are insanely useless on our prime channels these days, this story of friendship, love, endurance, jealousy, anger, hate, empathy, maturing cannot even come close to even the most hyped dramas of our era right now (yes even humsafar). This drama is still true to our world and lives today. Here are some other reasons why:

No female portagasnit comes close to what Shehnaz was and how she dealt so maturely with kashif, faraz and gulsher. One part of your review that was nailed was with shehnaz’s character

The language of the drama, I never heard so much common language used to beautifully, whether it be pashtoo, Urdu, Punjabi, saraki etc it was used with such humor and delicacy, and there were no over the top dialogues. It was like you were listing to people in everyday life. People you could meet while walking in a park.

Every character was so well defined and so true e.g.who could forget A to Z shikarpuri dipping his banana in his little tea cup while telling faraz and kashif that “nako- naki” ki translation “nosa nosi” hoti hai.

The humor was so well contrasted with tragedy. I still tear up when I watch faraz rip apart the 500 rupee leaving a note for gulsher and the 3rd last scene when the note appears and defines Gulshers life. How true were those words! Nothing was arbitrary in the drama, every dialogue; every scene had a place that played in the future.

I can go on and on. I wish we saw more characters like shenaz in our dramas. I wish we saw more on friendship on our dramas. I wish our directors and writers could make something as mature as real and as heart touching, with no over the top dialogues and real raw emotion as ABC. Sadly, there can nothing be like ABC, ever again.

    Thankyou Shohaib Mansoor

@ Omair… Alpha Bravo Charlie is one of those dramas that even i wouldn't Dare to write a reivew for.. because i feel that i am not mature enough for writing a review for it.

it really requires guts and confidence to review a drama of such class.. so good job!

as far drama is concerned…. i am just speech less.. its one of those dramas thats beyond any remarks… the way it impacted my life.. the way i had seen each episodes countless times.. the way i had my jaws wide open and i was literally praying for kashif when he was hanging in the air and wanted to reach the peak before Indians…it sent shivers down my spine…. and the way he says it to the Indian soldier…" Jaa lalay Aish ker" daaam!!!! it was classic!

I just think i can not express myself when i would talk about this drama.. i can go on and on and write soo much about it… but i lack the capacity to describe it in my words….
